Psychological Assessment

Richmond, VA | Bright Minds Psychology

A psychological assessment is a comprehensive, supportive process designed to understand how a child, teenager, or young adult thinks, learns, feels, and behaves. Rather than focusing solely on challenges, an assessment provides a complete picture of an individual’s unique cognitive strengths, emotional resilience, and areas where they may need extra support.

Think of it as a roadmap: it clarifies why certain difficulties are occurring and provides actionable, personalized strategies to help them thrive at home, in school, and in social environments.

The assessment is tailored to the individual's age and developmental stage, typically involving:

  • Initial Consultation: A developmental history interview with parents/caregivers (and the young adult, if applicable) to discuss current concerns and goals.
  • Interactive Testing: Engaging, one-on-one sessions utilizing standardized tools to evaluate cognitive abilities, academic achievement, attention, memory, executive functioning, or socio-emotional processing.
  • Observations & Checklists: Input gathered from parents, teachers, and the client to understand how they function across different settings.
  • Feedback & Recommendations: A dedicated meeting to review the findings, discuss any diagnoses (such as anxiety, depression, or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)), and deliver a comprehensive, written report including practical recommendations for school accommodations, therapy, and daily life.
